Introduction

Trails of Analysis is a data analytics project on the Trails series by Falcom. The project aims to provide insights into the Trails series by analysing the data from the games. The project is currently in its early stages and will be updated as more data is collected.


The Trails series is a series of role-playing video games developed by Nihon Falcom. The series is set in a fictional medieval fantasy world called Zemuria, and follows the political conflicts of the nations within it. The series began with the release of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky in 2004, and has since expanded into ten games on multiple platforms. The series has been met with critical acclaim, with praise being directed at its worldbuilding, characters, and narrative.


The Trails series is a subseries of Falcom's long-running The Legend of Heroes franchise, and is the third subseries in the franchise after the Gagharv trilogy and the Trails in the Sky trilogy. The Trails series is set in the fictional world of Zemuria, which is divided into several nations and regions. The series follows the political conflicts between the nations, as well as the internal conflicts within each nation. The series is known for its worldbuilding, with the world of Zemuria being described as massive and detailed. The series is also known for its narrative, which is described as epic and complex.

  • Trails of Cold Steel III

Network Analysis

The network analysis is done using the character interactions in the games. The interactions are extracted from the game scripts and are then processed to create a network graph. The network graph is then analysed to find the most important characters in the games.


The network graph is created using Gelphi. The graph is created by using the characters as nodes and the interactions as edges. The interactions are weighted based on the number of interactions between the characters. The graph is then analysed using the PageRank algorithm to find the most important characters in the games.

Moreover, it is evident that there are 3 main groups of communities form amongst the 9 games. Each community represents by its own color. The communities are as follows:


  • Pink: Trails in the Sky FC, SC, the 3rd
  • Blue: Trails of Zero, Azure
  • Green: Trails of Cold Steel I, II, III, IV

Since Trails of Cold Steel (ToCS) 3 and 4 mainly tie up the story of the previous games, it is not surprising that the characters from ToCS 3 and 4 are the most central characters in the network graph, connecting the three communities.
